for its efficiency, simplicity, and the ability to link a bunch of cellphone and landline numbers to a single Google Voice number, this smart telephony service can be a real pain if you’re in a middle of something and would like to deal with those pesky incoming calls at a later stage.

No more, said a Google software engineer Anthony Jawad who announced in a blog post that users can finally mute incoming calls:

The Do Not Disturb setting sends all callers straight to voicemail. This setting can be toggled on or off from the Settings menu or by calling your Google Voice number. And starting this week, you can set a timer so that it only remains active for a set period of time.

Besides routing your existing mobile and landline numbers to a unique Google number, Google Voice sports a number of other handy features. You can use Google Voice to send and receive text messages andmake calls to continental US numbers for free, place cheap outbound callsstarting at 2 cents a minute, retrieve automated voicemail transcripts, record calls, switch phones during a call, access universal voice mailbox, manage the service on the web, and more.

A native Google Voice app comes preloaded on flagship Android handsets like theNexus One, but not on the iPhone or webOS devices. Still, people on either of those platforms can use theGoogle Voice web appthat offers a more limited feature set.

Man, 21, killed in early-morning crash on Route …

LINCOLN, R.I. — A 21-year-old Pawtucket man died in an early-morning crash Saturday on Route 146, after his car left the road and struck a tree.

Jason B. Fontes of 61 Prince St., Pawtucket, was pronounced dead at the scene at 6:32 a.m. by the state medical examiner, according to state police Lt. David P. Tikoian.

Arriving at the scene shortly after 6 a.m., state police found Fontes’ 2004 blue Nissan about 135 feet into the woods, with heavy front-end and operator-side damage. It appeared he had been driving south on 146, when his car veered off the right shoulder of the road about 500 feet north of the Twin River overpass.

Tikoian said it appeared that speed and wet road conditions were factors in the accident.

Polish President Killed En Route to Katyn Memorial

Relations between Poland and Russia have been tense in part because of a perceived reluctance by Vladimir Putin to acknowledge and apologize for the Katyn forest massacre. But this week the President of Poland flew to Russia to participate in a ceremony to commemorate the event. I don’t imagine thedeath of the President of Poland Lech Kaczynski, his wife and other high-ranking officials in a plane crash in Russiawill help relations very much.
